Sunday Micro-Resolutions for a More Organised Workweek

We recently came across an article about “Micro-Resolutions”. It is all about making small changes to ultimately achieve a “Big” goal. The idea is that small tasks are easier and quicker to achieve than the big goal. These frequent achievements keep you motivated for longer. Whether it be saving for a house or running a marathon, we want to feel like we’re achieving something along the way.

Many people make a New Years resolution to be more organised or sometimes it’s an enduring desire waiting to be realised. Whether at home or at work, organised lives are simply easier and better. For us, the most important day of the week for organisation, is Sunday. Why Sunday you might ask? Well it’s the day before the busyness begins again. Before you’re inundated with meetings, report writing, phone calls, texts & emails to monitor, and don’t forget lunches, dinners and Baby Showers to attend!

So we thought, why not use “micro-actions” on a Sunday to achieve a more organised week and ultimately a more organised life. Who needs a sleep in, late morning brunch and a lazy afternoon nap? When instead you can tick things off on a “To-Do” List and feel gloriously productive! So, here’s our “Sunday Micro-Resolution List”, things you’ll resolve to do on Sunday so your workweek runs smoothly:

Clean It Up – Work provides enough stress in our lives. We don’t need to add to it with piles of clothes stashed in the bedroom, dust accumulating on everything and dirty dishes in the sink. A clean, tidy home means you come home from work to a place to relax and unwind in. So get cleaning!

  • Dirty Dishes washed, dishwasher emptied and everything put away.
  • Any old food thrown away immediately!
  • Bins emptied.
  • All dirty clothing washed, ironed and hung up in the closet – on a chair doesn’t count.
  • Surfaces wiped down with a damp cloth.
  • Furniture put in its correct place.

Plan, Plan, Plan! – During the week you simply don’t have the time to think about what your doing, eating, or meeting. Actually the less you have to think at all, the better. So on Sunday sit down for 5 minutes with a cup of tea and plan your week.

  • Write down all your meetings, brunch/lunch/dinner commitments, appointments and events on a weekly planner.
  • Block out times for fitness and me-time.
  • Write down the meals you need to prepare during the week – the Taste App is great for this.
  • Write a Grocery list.
  • Prepare a “To-Do” list (yes, another “To-Do List”, we love them!) – i.e. pay Phone Bill, Call a Plumber, email Netball team.

Get Organised – Make sure you have everything packed and ready to go for Monday morning, you don’t want to be searching for your house keys bleary eyed at 6am. Everything should be at your fingertips.

  • Stock up the fridge using your Grocery List or get your online order sorted.
  • Transfer everything from your “Weekend Bag” to the “Work Bag”.
  • Gym/Yoga/Running gear packed. If you exercise in the morning, have your gear laid out ready to pull on when you get up.
  • Think about what you’ll wear Monday and hang it out.
  • Charge the work phone (but don’t look at emails, it’s Sunday for crying out loud!).

Relax – Spend the last couple of hours of your Sunday night relaxing before the craziness begins again. After completing the rest of the List you now deserve some me-time.

  • 2 Hours before bed make a herbal tea (with a sneaky piece of dark chocolate).
  • An hour before bed switch the phone off – hide it in draw if you must. Technology stimulates the mind; calm it down before trying to sleep.
  • Take the time to go through your beauty routine; cleanse, use a mask, exfoliate, moisturise – this may be the only time in the week you get to do this, so make the most of it.
  • Get to bed early! – A good nights sleep is essential to a great (and productive) Monday.

Now you’re done. Have a great week!
